I’m not going to lie — when the pros call a wine a “masterful creation” my heart starts beating a wee bit faster. And when I see it’s nothing less than the new offering of Cupano’s beloved OMBRONE…oh baby, it is ON like Donkey Kong! Cupano might be relatively new to the Tuscan wine scene, but if you’ve scored any of our past offers — you just KNOW.
They have pedigree, and place, and budding talent — and everything is coming together like a bag of skittles left in your glove box. “The Architect of Italian Wine” Carlo Ferrini guided Lionel and Ornella in planting this pristine property, and then famed French biodynamics expert François Bouchet taught them how to farm it…and as if that weren’t already a MASSIVE kickstart for any rising star estate, the ICONIC Henri Jayer — one of the single most important and innovative Burgundy winemakers of ALL-TIME — taught Lionel everything he knew about winemaking. That’s the sort of pedigree that is simply unmatched, and the quality of this exceptional bottling showcases this like you wouldn’t believe!!! I mean, you saw the 96 POINTS, right???
Ok, then…let’s do this! Beguiling aromas of cherry compote, and zesty blood orange, with a mineral, almost sanguine twinge, filled with fanciful fruit and floral elements like black currants, and roasted plums, cigar smoke, and porcini mushrooms, atop wet terracotta clay. It’s IMMENSE and structured, but unimaginably silky, and drives onward with the persistence of a champion. It’s bold, and decidedly youthful — but nevertheless, a good swirl and 30 minutes in the decanter brings this baddie absolutely ROARING to life! I’m grabbing a couple to lay down — as I can’t wait to see what this will bring in another 7 or 8 years’ time. Over $80 OFF on one of Tuscany’s top estates — this is a Super Tuscan to savor…while it lasts, at least!!!
